A poultice can be very effective in treating puffiness and dark circles, and relieving aching, tired or sore eyes. Prepare the herbs by pulping leaves or flowers or by finely chopping and bruising them and adding just a little water. Lay this mixture between two pieces of muslin (large enough to cover the skin around and under each eye), then discard after use. Good herbs for eye treatments include:

Chamomile - Use two chamomile tea bags, available from health food stores. Pour a cupful of boiling water over the bags and leave them to steep for three minutes. Remove the tea bags and as soon as they have cooled sufficiently place them over the eyes for about 10 minutes. Sip the tea as you relax.

Rose Hip - Use the same method as for chamomile. This poultice is particularly good for puffiness under the eyes. Fennel - Mix fresh bruised fennel leaves with a grated raw potato and spread the mixture on muslin pads. Lay the pads over the eyes to soothe delicate skin. Leave on for 15 minutes then dab with cold water and dry with a soft clean towel.

Coltsfoot - To reduce puffy eyes, bruise or mince fresh coltsfoot leaves and add enough water to make a pulp. Place between layers of muslin to make two eye pads and chill them in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Put the poultices over puffy eyes and leave for 15 minutes. Dab with fresh cold water and dry with a soft clean towel.
