The Heartland Spa
History and Origin
Natural plant oils have been recognized for well over 6,000 years and are believed to have originated in China. Trade merchants transported these oils to Egypt and beyond. These oils were used for their medicinal, cleansing, preservative, and mood enhancing properties. In 1928, a French chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse, introduced the term “aroma therapie” which means therapeutic action of aromatic plant essences. Dr. Jean Valnet carried on Gathefosse’s finding and was so impressed with the antiseptic and healing properties of the oils that they were used for healing the wounds of World War II soldiers.
How Aromatherapy Works
The oils can be applied to the skin with a massaging technique and/or the scents of the oils can be diffused into the air. The molecular structure of essential oils is very tiny which allows them to dissolve easily in alcohol, emulsifiers and oils. During application, the essential oil penetrates the skin and adipose layer, which can detoxify and help reduce stress. Essential oils are also highly volatile and evaporate quickly. When inhaled through our sensitive nasal passages, they trigger the brain to take the information directly to the limbic system, which addresses emotion and motivation.
How Aromatherapy can help at Home?
Using essential oils on a regular basis at home can balance a hectic lifestyle. Essential Oils are commonly used on a regular basis for mental fatigue and muscular aches. The oils can simply be applied to the skin with a self-massage or can be diffused into the air. To relieve mental fatigue, the following oils are recommended: Basil, Juniper, Melissa, Pine, Rosemary, Sage, Clary, or Thyme. To relieve muscular aches, the following are recommended: Cinnamon, Comfrey, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Marjoram, Pine, Rosemary , or Sage. Essential oils can be purchased at a Natural Food Store.
With a little more time, a Sea Salt Scrub home treatment can exfoliate, detoxify and rejuvenate.
