Knowing the holidays are just around the corner can bring thoughts of despair for your nutrition plan. Although food surrounds every holiday, you don't have to sabotage your nutrition plan to enjoy this time of year. Here is a list of helpful hints for now and later during the holiday season.

1. Step up your nutrition and exercise efforts now. The average holiday weight gain is 5 - 7 pounds.

2. Don't ignore your exercise plan when the weather changes. Start thinking of fun alternatives to your outdoor activities today.

3. Eat fruits or vegetables as a snack before you attend an event serving food. You will be less likely to overeat while there.

4. Keep your alcohol intake to a minimum. The additional calories add up quickly.

5. It's ok to sample as you cook! Have smaller portions at mealtime to balance the calories out.

6. Move away from the same old same old. Try new healthful tasty options.

7. Cut calories easily by using healthier fat alternatives such as oils, yogurt, or pureed fruit. These items can also add taste and texture to foods.

Keeping yourself on track with your nutrition and fitness plan during the holidays can be challenging, but the rewards for doing so are well worth it!
