Being able to age gracefully is not only great for our appearance but it is imperative to our health. Menopause officially begins one year after women cease to have their monthly cycle. During Menopause women have an increased risk for a variety of ailments, including hot flashes, weight gain, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. The good news is fewer symptoms of menopause are reported by women who exercise regularly.

  1. Heart Health: Menopause increases your risk of heart disease, so it is important to take preventative measure such as adding aerobic activity to your exercise regiment. Choose one of your favorite brisk paced activities, such as walking, tennis, or an aerobics class and improve your heart's health. Try to do one of these activities at least 3 times a week for at least a half hour at a time.
  2. Bone Health: Menopause increases your risk of osteoporosis or severe bone loss because women become deficient in estrogen with the loss of menstruation. This alone builds a strong case to why you should perform weight bearing activity. Whether you choose to hire a personal trainer, hit the weight room by yourself or join a Hatha Yoga class, you need to participate in some type of bone building activity at least 3 times a week.
  3. Joint Health: Regardless of age or gender, your joint health hinges on putting them through a full range of motion as often as you can. One of the major "joint" systems in your body is your spine and when it become rigid and inflexible, it changes the whole make up of your body. There are a multitude of classes that can assist you in performing full range of motion movements for your joints. These include: yoga, Pilates, Nia, and Tai Chi. Because women have an increased risk for osteoporosis during menopause, as well as, a loss of agility due to inactivity, one false step and you could find yourself seriously injured.
  4. Body Composition: As women age their metabolism slows, making it a lot easier to gain weight. We all know the only way to truly lose weight and keep it off is to burn more calories than we consume. Consume a heart healthy diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables and Omega-3 fatty acids. You can age with grace, reduce hot flashes, increase muscle strength and improve bone density during menopause.

Make exercise a part of your daily routine and notice the difference in your symptoms.
