Why is Functional Training the latest craze to hit the fitness world? It is not a new concept, but it has resurfaced because it is a more holistic approach to physical conditioning than traditional bodybuilding. Functional training focuses on movements, not isolated muscles.

Looking at the background of physical conditioning, we remember the emergence of the Universal and Nautilus machines in the 1960's. These resistance machines claimed to provide a superior training stimulus based on their ability to isolate muscles. The concept of training isolated muscles has become the model for weight training as most people know it today. It definitely delivered both the strength and the aesthetic results it promised; yet it has not addressed some athletic performance results to the satisfaction of many coaches and athletes looking not merely for more strength, but also for better function.

The Functional Training concept involves training movements as that may occur in day-to-day actions. For example, a person lifting heavy equipment would rarely be doing that while being supported by some external type of bench or rigid pad. Rather, the person would be depending on his own ability to stabilize himself, while at the same time using groups of muscles in synergy to perform the task. Similarly, a person swinging a golf club would be simultaneously using many muscles groups, rather than using one group at a time.

In Functional Training, the goal is to create muscle memory of combined movements rather than memory for each group alone. The goal is to encourage a flow of muscles as they work together, rather than to learn only individual muscle movements. Because of this Functional Training is a very beneficial workout for your whole body. Try it today!
