Life is a high wire act. The question is not whether or not we will get thrown off balance, but when. The key to long term fitness progress is having a plan for re-grouping when things get shaky.
The first step is assessing where you are now. In other words, are you just a little de-railed or is it a full scale "train wreck"? You need to be honest and objective about this. Start by listing the things you are still doing that are positive. Identify nutritional habits that are supporting your health goals and discern the true source of your obstacles.
You may not be able to eliminate the temptation of the office candy dish, but if you plan nutritious snacks that are also delicious, you will enjoy your snacks and have more resolve. The key to long term success, in fitness and life, is to build on your strengths and create a support structure for your weaknesses.
If your goal is weight management, hopefully you are not just using the scale to measure your progress. You should have a starting point of body composition and/or tape measurements and a reasonable plan. Most people fail to appreciate that consistently eating well and feeling better as a result is a fantastic goal in and of itself.
Too often, we are discouraged if there is no weight lost. Don't be trapped by this negative thinking! Keep a food journal; and track your exercise, food intake, how you feel and energy level. Then, every 4-6 weeks have a body composition analysis done or do tape measurements yourself.
As long as you are exercising and eating well, you are giving your body what it needs to re-build healthy cells that turn into blood, muscle, bone, hair, skin and nails. Be Patient. It is a marathon, not a sprint. And don't rely on the scale alone. On a weight loss plan - if the inches are less -you are a success.
