Hiking is the cool new sport for fit folks like us. Of course it's been around for a good long time and proven to be aerobic, increase stamina, build muscle and support strong bones. Besides that, it's fun to take a hike.

If you've been walking as a health routine, it could be you're at a plateau in your fitness level. Do you have five or ten pounds to lose? Do you want to feel stronger and more youthful, then let me challenge you to get hooked on hiking.

Take this quick quiz and see where you stand on hiking for health. Just select the best answer:
1. The perfect time to hike, if you're interested in losing unwanted body fat is A) after a meal, B) before a meal, C) early in the morning, D) whenever you get a chance.

2. To avoid catching a cold, A) hike strenuously whenever you can, B) stay away from everyone, C) never swim when it's cool outdoors, D) none of the above.

3. To get the most from your hiking program, A) stop often to admire the scenery, B) travel and hike in exotic places like Costa Rica, Maui and Madagascar, C) hike really fast, you want to feel exhausted, D) learn to hike and then make your goal to hike over varied terrain.

4. Hiking can A) help you lose unwanted body fat without reducing the healthy calories you consume, B) increase your fitness level, C) help manage the emotional ups and downs we all experience, D) build confidence along with all of the above.

5. Hiking shoes are like the tires on your car because A) they grip the terrain, B) work best when they're in top shape and impossible to do without, C) should be rotated as often as necessary, D) all of the above.

Some of your responses were simple, but I hope you've learned a bit more on hiking for health.

Now here are the answers:
1. D - Although all of the responses to question 1 are good, I believe that the best time to take a hike is when you can get out for hiking, with the exception of right after a heavy, high-fat meal or if you're experiencing physical concerns. If you do over-indulge (and who hasn't), rather than taking a strenuous hike, go for a walk and you'll feel more comfortable.

2. A - It's recently been determined that those who hike for fitness are far less likely to catch a cold, even when exposed to germs. And if you do catch one, a hiker's cold will typically last half as long as someone who isn't fit.

3. D - This is a surprise for some hikers since many have been hiking and walking for years. However, if you're seriously about your sport take a lesson from an experienced hiker or fitness coach. You'll want to learn the heel-to-toe action, the rest step, good posture and some basic first aid for the trail. You'll learn how to check your pulse rate, hike in varied altitudes, and select sturdy hiking gear.

4. D - All of the above is the answer to this one. Hiking, in addition to the benefits stated in the statement, can promote a healthy range of blood pressure, may help those who have elevated cholesterol manage it more effectively, could alleviate symptoms of PMS, and provide a great way to keep weight at the most comfortable level. Hiking is a superb way to keep the body firm, which in turn makes us feel and look more youthful. Sure that's vanity talking, but if hiking keeps us looking great, who's going to argue with that.

5. D - While you might not think you need to change your hiking shoes often, if you enjoy regular hiking and walking adventures, you'd be wise to do so. (Some boots can be re-soled and some can't. When you invest in a new pair ask the sales person about this option that could save you a bundle.) Boots that are worn on the heels do not keep the body in good alignment. Experiencing back ache? It could be your boots.

New hiking books, unlike sneakers, may feel somewhat inflexible, especially if you've never worn them. Buy at a hiking or outdoor gear store where you can get professional advice on fit. Then break them in by wearing them around the house and then for your daily walk. The key to happy hiking is having happy feet. Get out for a hike this summer and you'll stay fit for life.
