How to survive the holiday indulgences and still fit into our favorite jeans? Most people have a love/hate relationship with the holidays. They love the excitement, fun and entertainment of the holidays but, hate the 5-8 pounds they inevitably gain. We can make this year different by thinking proactively before we overindulge. Besides pushing yourself away from the table and wearing tight pants to remind you to eat less, make plans to burn calories not just ingest them.
1. When you go shopping for all the trimmings, park in the furthest parking spot from the door and walk. Don't forget to pick up the pace.
2. When bringing your groceries into the house hold the bags out away from your body to create more intensity. Hold them overhead, out to your sides at shoulder height, or even behind your body, to involve different muscle groups.
3. When making Holiday treats for the neighbors or family, make something that isn't necessarily your favorite treat. It will be easier to resist the temptation.
4. Tricep press your cans of pumpkin, 12 on the right then repeat on the left.
5. Add fiber to some of your Holiday recipes to help keep your belly full and to keep you form going back for seconds.
6. Play a game of "HORSE" while waiting for the turkey to cook.
7. While watching football on TV, grab your exercise ball and bounce, stretch and crunch your way into making room for pumpkin pie.
8. Do not go any longer than 2 days without some type of cardiovascular activity, your metabolism adjusts quickly.
9. If you normally go for a run on Friday mornings, try not to miss it. Make it a family activity and get the whole family to run, walk, skip, and jump around the block.
10. Make a new active family tradition, hike a local Mountain the day after Thanksgiving or challenge other families to a game of flag football. Make physical fitness a part of your everyday life and you will always be better off physically, emotionally, and mentally. Enjoy your favorite foods in moderation, and enjoy the extra time with family. Just make sure that while you are nurturing everyone else that you nurture yourself as well.
