The Heartland Spa
Taiji, or Tai Chi, is a centuries old Chinese martial art. As a martial art, it is characterized as an internal martial art, meaning it relies on internal energy or qi (pronounced chee) as opposed to physical force. Taiji is a series of choreographed postures and is often referred to as moving meditation. As a fitness program, Taiji provides the body with gentle non-impact range of motion exercise, bathing all the body’s joints with blood and oxygen, enhancing joint function. It is an excellent form of balance training. Practiced consistently, Taiji helps balance and regulate circadian rhythms in the body, providing deeper rest at night and more energy during the day as well as many other benefits.

Explore and play with the three essential aspects of Taiji training. The aspects are dynamic Qi Gong (cultivation of internal energy), Quan (taiji form), and Tui Shou (push hands). Establishing a working physical vocabulary of these practices demonstrates some of the primary values of this art.

Centering obviously relates to balance, but also means experiencing being in one’s body to the maximum extent. It also infers relating with the body with a deep sense of peace and relaxation. Once connected into one’s body, we can experience extending our energy outside the body while remaining centered. We then can be at play with what it might take to influence external aggression while maximizing energy conservation and grace. These are excellent life skills that have many non-martial applications.

As a Destination Spa encourages positive lifestyle changes, Taiji encourages us to nurture ourselves, allowing us to lead full, powerful, balanced lives.

Ultimately Taiji is about living a good life.
