The worse I feel about my body, the worse I seem to look. Is this all in my head?

When we dislike our bodies we often fail to nurture them with daily physical activity, healthy and delicious foods, rest and relaxation. I know when I am feeling good about my body I am much more likely to go for a walk, a swim, or choose the foods that will energize me. But when I’m feeling fat and dumpy, I don’t want to be seen in my shorts or my bathing suit. I am much more likely to say “Oh what the heck” and order a hot fudge sundae for lunch - which only makes me feel more lethargic.

Not only do these negative thoughts affect our behaviors, they also affect our body’s chemistry. When you chronically stress yourself by focusing on what you hate about your body, you are flooding your body with stress hormones which have a cascade of negative effects. Here are just a few of the effects of these stress hormones:

1. Inhibition of protein synthesis. (No wonder your nails and hair aren’t strong)
2. Inhibition of fat metabolism. (No wonder you keep storing fat even though you’ve changed your diet and increased your exercise)
3. Reduction of favorable interferon levels which are necessary for certain immune cells to do their job of ridding the body of virus-infected cells and cancer cells.
