Thanks to schedule changes and a little indulgence, vacations often lead to weight gain. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your vacation without having to shed extra weight when you get home.

Vacation Checklist
  • Easy-to-carry snacks: fresh or dried fruit, almonds, walnuts, low-fat cheese sticks, baby carrots, celery,"healthy" food bars (avoid ones high in sugar and low in vitamins), whole grain crackers, bottled water.
  • Pack a jump rope, yoga mat, elastic exercise band or a Frisbee for a quick workout.
  • Exercise clothing: walking shoes and clothes to use for exercise.
  • Be aware that alcohol and salty foods will result in the retention of fluid.
  • Avoid drinking tons of coffee, caffeinated beverages and soda along the way. If you consume fruits and vegetables and non-caffeinated beverages, you will be more alert and sleep better at night.
  • As you travel, take "exercise" breaks as often as possible-auto/gas stops are good excuses for a quick walk, stretch, calisthenics. In flight, walk the plane aisle, do stretches in your seat. Be creative.
  • It is tempting, but do not open the mini-bar. Cover it with a towel, and take a walk to a nearby market to stock up on healthy food/beverages
  • Be picky with the room service menu. Keep the menu closed. Ask for a plate of steamed veggies with a grilled chicken breast or grilled fish.

If you plan carefully and think through your choices, it is possible to have a wonderful vacation and still stay with healthy food choices and an exercise plan.
