Red Mountain Spa (Utah)
Many guests visit Destination Spas to reconnect with good nutrition. With the delicious, healthy meals prepared for them, they remember how good it feels to eat well and give their body's premium fuel. The challenge is when they get home - how to incorporate better eating choices and habits into their daily lives. As a life coach, I have partnered with many clients on how to take good nutrition from the spa back into their real lives. Here are my top three success tips for taking concrete steps toward better nutrition.
1) Create a Strategic Plan
The plane or car ride home from a spa vacation presents a great opportunity to reflect on what worked well while at the spa and how to duplicate that success at home. Was it having meals prepared ahead of time? If so, look into the healthy food delivery options available in your area. Was it having new tastes and combinations to avoid getting bored with the food? If so, commit to trying a couple of new recipes a week. The main thing is give it some thought and record your best thinking about how to make better nutrition a reality in your life. Actually writing it down in a journal makes it so much more real.
2) Set Realistic Goals
Try to resist the temptation to make all the changes at once. For most people, this becomes just too overwhelming, and they soon abandon their better nutrition plan. Small, consistent steps are a good place to start. I suggest no more than two changes a month. Plus, this provides an opportunity to feel how much better that specific change is making you feel. Even at this slower pace, great strides can be made in just a few months. Remember - it did not take just a week or two to develop the old habits, and it does take some time for the new healthier options to sink in.
3) Make Time for a Check-In
It is great to set a course for change and better nutrition, but it is almost impossible to actually get there unless you find time to assess your progress and make any necessary course corrections. I recommend at least once a month that you find a fun place to go, such as a coffeehouse or park bench, bring your journal, and review your strategic plan. What have you done well? Stop and congratulate yourself, and figure out why that did work. Where are the challenges? Think about what you could do differently next time you are in that situation. Be a gentle observer. No need to punish yourself, but you do want to learn from your choices and actions. Record your insights and commitments, and use that as a place to begin your check-in the following month.
