In six months, Julie Skattuin dropped 17 pounds. The 35-year old mother of two credits this loss and a new, healthy lifestyle to her stay at a Destination Spa. "My approach to exercise and food is quite different now, explains the New York City resident.
Skattum joins a growing number of guests who are discovering the value of investing in health at an early age when changes are easier to make. Her spa vacation led to a take-home plan that includes nutritious meals, aerobic activity and light training with weights.
A spa nutritionist introduced Skattum to foods that normalize blood sugar, lower cholesterol, keep the digestive system healthy, enhance immune function and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. The spa's gourmet fare, low in fat and calories, helped her establish a better pattern of eating that continues today.
She quickly learned that starting a simple exercise program pays good health dividends. Just a brief morning walk improves the physical condition of people who have been mostly sedentary. But the sooner activity levels increase, the better off the body will be.
"When you begin early, there is almost a compound interest effect," says exercise physiologist Michael Hewitt, Ph.D. Bone mineral density builds easier and lean mass accrues faster. It also takes less effort when you're younger to maintain strength, cardiovascular condition, flexibility and weight than to try to get in shape during middle age.
Yet anyone can boost physical fitness, regardless of age. Studies show that even people in their early 90s increase leg strength and improve balance after starting to exercise. Their enhanced agility reduces the likelihood of falls.
Vacation spas offer many ways to meet fitness goals, from treadmills to challenging hikes. Trained, qualified instructors work closely with guests to determine the right program for individual needs.
"You don't have to do a formal workout to get in shape," stresses Hewitt. He advocates putting the fun back in exercise by riding a bike, skipping rope, dancing or clowning around aerobics.
"Act like a kid again, Hewitt recommends. "Because if it's play, you'll keep doing it. If it's a workout, you may not."
Spiritual awareness classes such as yoga or tai chi complement a physics exercise routine. These disciplines provide a mind- body connection that hell you focus internally. Common results include lower blood pressure, reduced stress and a longer attention span.
Astanga (power yoga classes, intense enough to take the heart to aerobic training range, appeal to young people in top condition. Gentler yogas prove popular with people who have a limited range of motion and minimal flexibility.
Everyone benefits from the natural body treatments that have become the hallmark of destination spas. Stress dissolves through pampering pleasures, which include soothing massages and aroma baths.
Experiences combine to provide the perfect vacation - one that doesn't require another day off to recuperate. Guests return home rejuvenated and with tools for pursuing wellness.
"I've got new habits now," says Skattum. "That means long,-term health effects."
