It's easy to live healthy while you're at a destination spa, but what's the secret to staying fit and well at home? Some of our trusted fitness and nutrition experts offer favorite tips and surprising facts.
- Olives have more cancer-fighting antioxidants per calorie than any other food. They're still high in fat, so don't overdo it but don't avoid them either.
- Jicama makes a good substitute for chips. Just cut them in strips and serve them with your favorite salsa. Or squeeze lime over the jicama strips and dip them in mild chili powder.
- Omega-3 fatty acids help decrease risk of heart disease and cancer. So while salmon and sirloin may have equal quantities of fat, the omega-3 fats in the salmon are much better for you.
- Keep a banana in the freezer. A frozen banana will add body and nutrients to your morning smoothie. Strawberries and orange juice are nice additions, too.
- Buy herbs and spices in small amounts. Because they lose their flavor and oomph over time, your herbs and spices will be pretty bland by the time you get halfway through a large jar. To release the flavor and aromatic oils of your herbs, crush them before using.
- To give a richer texture to any salad dressing, whisk in some nonfat yogurt.
- Sliced cucumbers in seasoned rice vinegar is an easy and delicious fat-free side dish.
- Don't get your zinc in a calcium/magnesium supplement. These minerals compete with zinc for absorption, and zinc generally loses out. Better to get your separately or in your multivitamin.
- Eating carbohydrates helps you relax because it boosts your serotonin levels.
- Just one chocolate kiss raises your endorphin level and makes you feel happy. However, the effect does not increase with additional kisses (not the chocolate kind, anyway).
- Mile for mile, you get the same fitness benefits from walking as running. It takes a bit longer to walk, but the sustained exercise gives you a workout and you're less prone to injuries when walking.
- You can do everything correctly in the gym but sabotage it all in the dining room.
- Strength-training after age 30 is especially important. That's when you naturally begin to lose muscle mass.
- In just 10 minutes, you can stretch all your major muscle groups. Make it a daily habit and you'll feel better for the rest of your life.
- The best kind of exercise is the one you enjoy - because that means you'll do it regularly.
