As we all have seen, extensive research has connected high stress levels with many illnesses ranging from decreased immune function to heart attacks! As the holidays come to a wrap many of us are left with residual stress of doing the every day combined with the holiday. Work related stress is one of the most common forms of tension we all know yet curbing it is seldom taught either at schools or the workplace itself. To remedy this, we looked into several different schools of thought ranging from Ayurveda to Buddhism and came up with these tips on quieting the mind and de-stressing:
Meditate: Make like the Buddha in the morning and spend 20 minutes “just sitting.” Even if you don’t feel like you are really able to meditate, just sitting in a meditation position and concentrating on your breath the best you can you can still reconnect you to the now. The main way to help yourself relax is to stop the chatter in your mind which can put you in a fight or flight mode and result in a build up of stress in the body.
Go with the flow: The Ayurvedic Tradition indicates that the day is divided into distinct cycles. Mornings (6-10am) are seen as Kapha time, which is slow and relaxed. The time between 10 am and 2pm is known as Pitta time, which is the most physically active. And finally 2pm to 4pm is Vata, a time of best manual dexterity and mental alertness. Recognizing this viewpoint, it would serve one best to start projects in the Pita time, when we are feeling most productive, and hence get them done quickly and effectively.
Get it down on paper: use a planner, or planning software to help you organize tasks. The more you get stuff on paper the less you're going over it in your head to not forget.
Put things in perspective: Often times we need to take a step back from the tasks that stress us at work in order to see that they aren’t worth so much physical abuse to our bodies. A big part of this is being able to “separate” yourself from the issues at work. A nice way to do this is to sit down for a quiet tea break before you go home.
