What Adults Can Do to Set an Example
Childhood obesity is an overwhelming epidemic. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) the level of childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years, and the prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years of age has increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008. Studies have revealed that 40% of obese children and 70% of obese adolescents become obese adults. By the time an obese child turns 6 years old, his/her chance of becoming an obese adult is over 50%!

Childhood ObesityThe reasons for these alarming statistics aren't surprising. "Quite simply, our children are eating way too many calories and they aren't getting enough physical activity," says Kim Onnen, MS, ACSM Health & Fitness Specialist for the Heartland Spa, who is also the mother of two with one on the way. "As adults, we must set an example for healthy living," she adds. "Not only do we ourselves need to exercise, but we need to promote exercise within our families as a way of life," she says. "We also need to focus on better eating habits and teach our children how to make healthier decisions when it comes to snacks and meals," she adds. "I firmly believe that change is possible, and that childhood obesity can become a thing of the past."

In our next newsletter, we will discuss specific steps you can take to create a healthier, more active family.
