We find ourselves living in "interesting times" - a gentle way of describing a period of anxiety and rapid change. But this can also be a time of learning and opportunity. Uncertainty can be our catalyst to reassess some beliefs, figure out how we can do things better and come back stronger.

Over the past year, certain "sure-thing values" proved to be vulnerable, and things we counted on have floundered. While we can't control everything, a change of perspective can make a huge difference.

Financial concerns will always be important to our culture and comfort, but perhaps we've valued them to the exclusion of other, more reliable assets. Some things never waver in value and always enrich us: The trail you hiked last year is just as inspiring as ever, your favorite music still gives you a thrill, friends and family enrich every day, and healthy living always makes you feel your best.

If you look more closely at your life, maybe things are better than you thought. Whether it's good health or positive relationships, you can pay attention to everything you still have rather than on focusing on losses.

Many people are making adjustments and cutting back in certain areas these days. This reality also makes room for new interests, old dreams and refocused relationships.

This is the time to cultivate positive thoughts and actions. It could mean volunteering in your community or fortifying yourself through meditation and spiritual growth.

This is a chance to reconnect with the people and activities that have given you joy in the past. Rekindling relationships can put your life in perspective. We can all engage in more acts of compassion, which simply means "not turning away" from those in need. Just visiting with a friend who needs a laugh can be a great gift for your friend and for you.

Show compassion for yourself, as well. Being kind to yourself is not about 'putting you first; it's about treating yourself as gently as a loved one might.

Fortunately, many of our most valuable assets are free and available at all times. Remembering that fact can make the difference during turbulent days and throughout life.

Things of Lasting Value That You Can Do Right Now
