The Greatest Gift of All: The “Present” Moment

The greatest gift we can give ourselves is the willingness to live in the present moment. According to Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now: A Guide To Spiritual Enlightenment, worry and tension are caused by fears of the future; while guilt, sadness, grievances, and lack of forgiveness are caused by regrets and resentments about the past. In both cases, our stress is increased by the inability to enjoy the present moment. The past perpetuates itself through lack of presence in the Now. The quality of our consciousness in this moment is what shapes our future, which we can only ultimately experience in the Now. Even if we win a fifty million dollar lottery we can continue to act out all the same unhappy mental and emotional patterns, only in a more luxurious environment! The point of power is always in the present moment. The only place where the past can be released, and true change can occur is in the “here and Now”.

Find the “narrow gate that leads to life”. It is called the Now. Narrow your life down to this moment. Your life “situation” may be full of problems, but see if you have any problem at this very moment. Not in ten minutes or tomorrow, but Now. When we are full of problems, there is no room for anything new, even a solution, to enter. Create some inner space and make room for the present moment.

Tolle suggests that we use our senses fully. He says: “Be where you are. Look around. Just look, don’t analyze. See the light the shapes, colors, textures. Be aware of the silent presence of each thing. Listen to the sounds, but don’t judge them. Listen to the silence behind the sounds. Touch something and feel the life energy inside your body. Move deeply into the Now. Leave behind the deadening world of mental abstractions and of time. Awaken out of the dream of time, and enter the eternal Now.”

Right Now! Every Moment!
