The word "togethering" is a relatively new word used in the area of travel. It describes a trend where family and friends plan vacations together. These "getaways" are a great way to re-connect and share in some common interests.

The importance of "Togethering" for vacation as it relates to health and wellness reminds me of another form of togethering that yields tremendous results and might help explain why so many find vacationing together so restoring and uplifting. It is a trend that is disappearing and as far as this observer is concerned, should be restored. It is eating dinner together as a family.

This activity now seems ancient. It is a lost concept, a lost art. However, it is one that proves to be a very simple and effective way to improve communication, reestablish or strengthen relationships and to improve nutrition. This form of togethering has been shown to:

*Decrease the use of prescription drugs and illegal drugs among teens.

*Girls who have five or more meals a week with their families are one-third less likely to develop unhealthy eating habits. This may be skipping meals to development of anorexia or use of diet pills.

*Divorce has proven to be lower in those families who eat dinner regularly together.

This same concept can be practiced with families who regularly vacation together. A healthy vacation can provide an opportunity to improve relationships. It can be a time to remove yourself from the normal stressors of daily life that can interfere with families spending quality time together.

It can provide a place where healthy activities like hiking, yoga, rock climbing or spa treatments are utilized together. These activities can provide learning opportunities, creating a close bond.

Whether at the dinner table or on a fun filled destination spa vacation, time together can provide all of us with an effective, enjoyable and creative way of rejuvenating our bodies and soul.
