DSG website visitors and spa-goers have voted and the final resutls are in! To celebrate National Nutrition Month, we asked visitors to vote for their favorite fruits and vegetbles. Green vegegetables and berries faired very well, garnering most of the votes. And the winners are......

Vegetables
1st place = broccoli (29%)
2nd place = asparagus (20%)
3rd place = green beans (10%)

Fruit
1st place = blueberries (16%)
2nd place = pineapple (15%)
3rd place = strawberries (12%)

Regardless of what your favorites are, remember to listen to your mother's advice and eat your fruits and vegetables. Eat a wide variety and plenty of them. A good way to "measure" your intake is to think in terms of percentages - at least 50% of your grocery cart, 50% of what you eat during the day, 50% of your plate at a given meal should be fruits and vegetables.

The New Dietary Guidelines Consume recommends that everyone consume a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables while staying within energy needs. Two cups of fruit and 2˝ cups of vegetables per day are recommended for a reference 2,000-calorie intake, with higher or lower amounts depending on the calorie level. The new guidelines also recommends that individuals choose a variety of fruits and vegetables each day. In particular, select from all five vegetable subgroups (dark green, orange, legumes, starchy vegetables, and other vegetables) several times a week.
