The intent of this article is to share good news - 3 success stories of schools that have made remarkable improvements toward healthier nutrition in their lunch and snack programs, without losing revenue!
Whitefish Middle School (Whitefish, MT) Through the collaborative efforts of students, parents, teachers, and school administrators, sodas and candy, sold in vending machines, were replaced with 100% fruit juices, water, low-fat milk, yogurt, and bagels. As a result, net income increased while disciplinary actions after lunch declined by 95%.
Sacramento School System (Sacramento, CA) Sacramento schools no longer offer junk food, pops, and a la carte sales in the cafeteria. Gone are the days when low-income students felt embarrassed by lining up for their reduced cost meals while their classmates could choose burgers and pizza. Now, a variety of meals are served that meet government standards, including: salads, lower fat pizza, sandwiches, and sushi. And, a thoughtful touch . . . Students now pay by punching in their student ID numbers, so no one knows if or how much a student is paying for lunch.
McComb School District (McComb, MS) To encourage students to make healthier choices, the McComb School District implemented several nutrition policies, including:
- In elementary classrooms, junk foods are no longer used to reward performance.
- Students now sell candles, coupon books, and wrapping paper as fund raisers - replacing cookies and candy.
- Only water, 100% juices, low-fat milk, and low-sugar sports drinks are allowed in vending machines.
- Logos of popular sodas on vending machines have been replaced by pictures of water and fruit juices.
The high school reports no loss in revenue or decline in purchasing.
